| Just a few days ago we had clear gorgeous skies! |
I really, really dislike snow. It's freezing, gets dirty looking so fast, makes driving a pain in my back side and is all around unpleasant to me. A few years back I tried to start snowboarding in an attempt to like the snow more. I figured if I had a hobby that involved it we might get along better. NOPE. All that occurred in my 4-5 days on the mountain were swear words and an instance in which I unstrapped my board and proceeded to walk down the entire side.
I really just hate being cold. Or hungry. Basically if I could eat on a beach in Mexico forever I would be a happy chica.
On the other side of the last couple weeks I've been noticing a lot of good deeds that have been keeping my faith in humanity renewed. I was at a stop light and noticed an SUV who had somehow died mid intersection. I could see a smaller woman driving and instantly put myself in her position. Just as I was trying to decide if there was anything I could do to help a couple of guys on the sidewalk ran over, followed by a couple more from the other side. These 4 young men who didn't know each other pushed her car without being asked through the rest of the intersection and into a safe parking lot. And then just waved and went their separate ways! I don't even think they got to talk to the driver except to point to where she should steer. I thought it was so cool to see teenagers so willing to help.
And then there is my dry cleaner. We had a dry cleaner right by our last apartment where I would always take Preston's shirts. The couple who ran it seriously made my day every time I went to drop off or pick up our clothes. I was always greeted with a smile and they always remembered my name. When we went to Washington for Tom & Taryn's wedding I came back to pick up shirts. I don't even remember telling them we were going. And I was asked all about my friend's wedding. They are day makers. We recently moved across town and it really doesn't make sense to drive over to their establishment anymore. I know it sounds so silly but I wanted them to know how much I appreciated them. So I brought over a thank you note on our last day at the old place. They probably think I'm totally crazy. But I appreciate people who are continually kind and personable.
This made me remember a time when I lived in New York. My roommate got home one night and couldn't find her wallet. She knew she had it in the cab and paid for her ride. So we all figured she left it in the back seat when she got out of the cab. Technically there is a lost and found for cabs but it's quite the black hole. I have never heard of anything actually being recovered. And loosing a wallet is stressful anyways. The next day she happened to be the only one home when we got a buzz down at our building's door. A man buzzed in to say he found her wallet last night on the street. She told us he didn't look like he could have had much. But since it had been pouring rain the night before he had laid out everything she had in there to dry and put it back together to return. Not one thing missing, and not one thing out of place. We couldn't believe it!
A lot is happening out there that makes me nervous to have kids. Especially to have kids go into high school. But there is also so much good. And I love it when I notice these things more. It makes me want to be a better person and to help whenever I see the chance...
Xoxo
